VisualStudioHacks.com Forums

by javery on February 14, 2006

One of my recent goals has been to try to transform VisualStudioHacks.com from a book-specific site into a more general community site. I want to keep it focused on just Visual Studio, but I am going to slowly add new features as I get time to implement them.

I am pleased to annouce that I have added forums to the site, I hope that this will help create a stronger community around the site. I setup a number of general forums as well as one specifically for book questions. Check em out!

I decided to try out the Yet Another Forum.NET because it looked nice and was also available under the GPL. It was pretty easy to setup and customize, I think it turned out looking pretty good.

I actually toyed with the idea of converting the entire site over to CommunityServer but in the end I decided I wanted a little more flexibility that only a custom app can provide. I eventually plan on building some more book specific features into the site and may eventually turn it into a small open-source project. (which is the only reason I didnt use CommunityServer for the forums, I want to write hooks in to the forums software to tie the site together but I couldn’t have done that and re-distribute it with the CS forums)

Have you seen the screencast for the Rails acts_as_threaded plugin? (http://www.railtie.net/plugins/acts_as_threaded/threaded.swf)

Yeah, I know… but just sayin’. Any excuse to play with new toys right? :-)
