Since I am down here in Raleigh relaxing I decided to hook up the Wii and see what games were available for download, I of course downloaded Super Mario Bros and showed my wife how you could warp from 1-2 to 4-1, but then screwed up the second warp and went to 5 instead of 8. Oh well, she still said I was cool.
With the other half of my 1000 credits I downloaded Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. I forgot what a great game this was. I downloaded this one because I never did beat it, back in the day I got stuck on one of the bosses and never finished it. My new number 1 goal in July is to beat this game, it’s not looking good though because I already had to check a FAQ to remember what I need to do to find the damn candle or hammer.
This game has reminded me of a couple things about old video games that new video games just don’t match:
1) It’s hard. New games like to give you a couple hours of gameplay that any semi-competant four year old could handle. This game really doesnt. You can’t just hack your way through, the first palace you fight through will tear you up if you get lazy.
2) No big movies or other crap. Sure they look nice, but I forgot how cool it was to start a game and start to play right away. You go to a new town or fight an enemy all you get is a flash of the screen and some simple music.
3) No load times. I never sit there and wait, unless its because I forgot you have to use the select and start keys.
I can see myself dropping some money on the Wii, they sure don’t make em like they used to.

The WII is great isn’t it?
I don’t care for their WII credit system, but I like the ability to play all the old games.
If you don’t already have them you should get some wireless gamecube controllers to play the games rather than using the WII controllers.
BTW, SMB is all my wife plays…..
I bought one of the old school controllers that plugs into the Wiimote, but for the NES games I usually just turn the Wiimote sideways.

My only download so far was Super Mario Kart – my favorite race game of all time. It does require the classic controller though (won’t work with the wiimotes).
My Wife would destroy you in SMB. We have the original NES at home and she can beat the game in under 20 minutes. She kicks my but at that game and Tetris and Zelda.. Although I did have to beat a couple of Monsters in Zelda II for her. We started playing that and got to the last guy and gave up for a while. It just got really hard and starting over all the time suck donkey balls. I wish she wasn’t so intimidated by the new controllers cuz then we could play more new games.
There is defiantly a cut off to the older is better. I’ve played a couple of the xbox arcade games, and compilations from the Atari era, and I just can’t stand them. I remember them being awesome back in the day, but now I’m spoiled by graphics, and immersion game play, it hurts to go back too far.
