BlogJetThis Extension for FireFox

by javery on July 24, 2004

This is a very early attempt at writing a FireFox extension that replicates the “BlogJet This!” button in IE. It has been fun to spend time on something that has absolutely nothing to do with work, writing, or even the technologies that I use. I can’t remember the last time I stayed up till 3 AM trying to get something to work. Mozilla has a pretty interesting design, working with XUL and javascript has been interesting.

To use this extension you must:

1) Download and install it.

2) Have BlogJet installed and in the C:\Program Files\BlogJet directory. (I will make this customizable later)

Once you have it installed you can then:

1) Select the text you want to blog and copy it to the clipboard. (I will automate this next)

2) Right-Click and click BlogJetThis. This will open Blogjet and copy the title and url over.

This is pretty untested as I just whipped it together tonight, so use at your own risk. :) (All feedback would be greatly appreciated though)

Works pretty well. My only feedback is that it automatically launches a new instance of BlogJet, even if there is one open. But that’s it so far. I’m sure once they enable trackbacks in BlogJet you’ll be able to capture that too.

Yeah, the IE blog this does the same thing… I will have to figure out if there is someway to avoid that.

Thanks for checking it out! Look for a new version in the next week or so.

i downloaded the .xpi file – how do you install it?

James Avery July 28, 2004 at 10:44 pm

Clicking on the link from FireFox should cause it to install… but if you downloaded it you can go to File -> Open File and click on the .xpi.

Make sure you have the newest version for FireFox. (.9)

Glad you are checking it out!

Get error

BlogJetThis 0.1 could not be installed because it is not compatible with this version of Firefox

(will only work with Firefox version from 0.8 to 0.9+)

I’m running version 1.0 – any updates?

Cheers

Paul
